How To: Wear Buffalo Plaid
When thinking about buffalo plaid, lumberjack immediately comes to mind. Buffalo plaid is a specific plaid made of red and black with a simple two-way pattern. Originating in Scotland, Woolrich revamped the print back in the 1800’s. The pattern emerges around the holiday season every year in the form of blankets, scarves and shirts. Being only a few days away from Thanksgiving, more and more of this print will make its way into stores. You don’t have to be a tomboy to pull this print off. It’s really versatile and even the girliest girls can work this into their holiday outfits.
Buying it in a skirt form is one of the easiest ways to make a rugged item more feminine. You can layer a pair of black tights underneath if it’s chilly for layers with either a pair of rain boots or duck shoes for warmth. You can also layer a big sweater and longer coat if you are looking to keep the cold out. For warmer temperatures, a simple white button up or a crew neck shirt still says Fall/Winter, but won’t leave you sweating. During the day, I’d wear a pair of brown leather loafers! And then for a night out, switch your loafers for a pair of tall over-the-knee boots or pumps for a little height shown here.
If you aren’t read to commit to a skirt, add a cute scarf over a sweater and skinny jeans with ballet flats. Scarves are a perfect way to try new colors or prints without making a big investment. You can add one over a button up (see here) or add a blazer for a more polished look. Whatever you decide, don’t be afraid to try to mix it with warm brown leather accessories or preppy touches. Buffalo plaid is a classic print that’s been around for over 150 years, you can’t really go wrong giving it a shot!
