DIY Cut Off Shorts
Shorts: DIY // Tunic: LC Lauren Conrad // Shoes: Report // Purse: Michael Kors
Been a while since I posted a DIY project. These cut offs are my new favorite upcycled item for spring. I tried making some last season and seriously failed, so I thought I would share a few tips and tricks today. Cutoffs look great for all of the warmer seasons. I plan to wear them again with a button up and rain boots on a hike, or a pair of heels and tunic for a night on the town. I found there are two things that make a great pair of shorts - the fit, and how they are cut on the hemline.
- Buy a pair of jeans 1-2 sizes up. This allows it to be really loose in the leg. You don't want shorts that are too tight - that's not comfortable and unless your are a teenager, not flattering.
- Don't cut them too short. Start long, try them on, then repeat. It's kind of like your hair - once you cut it you can't go back so take your time.
- Cut at an angle. You want the inseam to be longer in the crotch and angle up higher on the sides. I added a diagram for you to look at above.
- Wash them in between cuts and this look is great with a pair that is already distressed. I actually used an old pair I had by Lucky Brand. I wasn't wild about them as a pair of jeans since I lost weight, but they made the perfect pair of shorts.
That's pretty much how easy it is! I washed mine several times and decided to roll them up for this outfit. A pretty floral tunic and fringe sandals give them an effortlessly cool look. It's great for a Saturday to shop at the market or stomp around at a flower garden. Add a simple crossbody - this Michael Kors one is on sale for under $100 right now!
I never thought shorts were the most flattering object on me, but when the leg is wide enough it looks great. I think the key is even though they are DIY - they are from a pair of jeans where I loved the fit in the hip and waist. I also think it matters what you pair with them. I personally, like to keep the top conservative since I'm showing off a little leg. Too much skin can be a really bad thing.
