Thanksgiving is a few weeks away and if you are anything like me you are already dreaming of all of the delicious dishes that will be served. I thought it was appropriate for us to have a quick discussion about health and fitness before diving into the high calorie season. You don’t have to stick to a strict diet all season. You don’t have to jump onto a crazy workout regimen. You can actually enjoy the holidays, move your body and keep the weight off with simple strategies. I’ve found over the years a few things have helped me stay in shape while enjoying all of the amazing foods our holiday traditions provide.

Move your body every single day

Here’s the thing - your body requires movement to burn calories. If you intake an extra 500 calories a day during the holidays then you will need to burn an extra 500 to maintain your weight. It’s really simple science. Start with a good morning walk every single day. If you live in a cold climate - do 100 squats. These are really simple activities and will set the tone for better focus and elevate your mood for the rest of the day. Another tip is to take a brisk 10-15 minute walk after you eat. It aids in digestion making it easier for your body to burn calories. A couple of days a week add a longer, high intensity workout in like BBG, a yoga flow or 3 mile walk/jog.

One Step Closer Healthy

Years ago I read about this concept. You don’t have to say no to all of the things and deprive yourself - just pick one step at each meal to get closer to healthy. For instance, I swapped Truvia for sugar in my coffee. You can also have either appetizers or dessert instead of having both. If you want to have a cookie eat one, just don’t eat four. Little choices are easier than a complete diet overhaul and when in doubt go for a walk! Just choosing one step to be healthier each days adds up over the course of two months!

Drinks are Full of Calories

If there is one group of food and beverage I advise you to really watch it’s what you consume drink wise. You can have festive drinks with minimal calories if you plan ahead. I love making a delicious Salted Caramel Latte with Almond Milk - see this video for how to! I also drink tons of fruit infused sparkling waters. Staying hydrated is key to getting your body to flush out toxins and operate better. Pick out a new water bottle and make the commitment to drink it before lunch. Another thing is to have water with your meals. Reserve your evenings for a cup of warm herbal tea and if you do choose to have a cocktail - don’t go overboard. A bottle of wine has over 600 calories. Just sayin’. If you can skip the alcohol and get yourself a better night of rest.

Get a Full Eight Hours in Bed

Get your beauty rest! Yes you heard me! Give yourself a bedtime and stick to it. Sleep is vital to your body burning fat. Did you know a lack of sleep can lead to fat storage? It also raises your cortisol and stress levels. Practice laying in bed with the lights off for a full eight hours. Even if you don’t fall asleep it’s important for the body to rest and relax for that time frame. Try establishing a bedtime routine and turn off screens an hour before getting to bed.

Making small adjustments like moving your body more and choosing just one thing to give up or treat yourself to is a lot easier than saying no to everything. Get your rest, meditate and minimize stress so you can enjoy this season instead of dread it!
