Small Town Charm: Fairhope, Alabama
On my way home from my travels this week to the Florida coast I made it a point to take a short detour through Fairhope, Alabama. It’s a coastal city about half an hour South from Mobile, AL and an hour from Pensacola, Florida. The city has so much charm it felt like I was instantly transported to a little European town. From lovely boutiques to patios covered in flowers there’s no dull corner as you make your way through the streets of their small downtown area. The city dates back to late 1800’s when a group of popular reformists decided to create a southern utopia. The city was built for creative and free thinking people. Around 1908 the city was established with about 500 people.
This resort city is perfectly located on the southern shoreline of Alabama. Tons of cottages line the coastal bluffs. There’s a beautiful park that leads to the pier for you to walk at sunset for the most beautiful view. While I was there tons of photographers were shooting portraits. It’s a welcomed scene for an overnight trip, full week of vacation or just a few hours.
One of the things that really took me by surprise was how each corner there was a new view to see. There is so much color and personality with unique identities at each shop and restaurant. You can also stay in historic cottages along the bluffs and bike to the downtown area. Due to how hot it was I wore a sunhat and cotton nap dress while I walked up and down each street and alley.
I recommend stopping by Dragonfly and driving down the scenic route to get there. It’s a slower drive that runs parallel to the main road but will give you a shady drive up and down rolling hills. When you arrive take a stroll through their version of French Quarter’s where you will find fountains and the most beautiful architecture. If you have been to Fairhope before, please feel free to drop recommendations below! I plan on visiting again!
